Prayerfully Poetic

A Collection of Prayerful Poems by Tim McGee

They Followed Him

they abandoned their boats
and followed Him.

left nets, waves, salt-stung air,
for a voice that stirred
deep currents within,
cast off from shore,
to chart a course
in unseen waters,
hands once roughened
by ropes and wood,
now open, empty,
filled with faith,
treading paths
where footprints fade
yet hearts remember.

they abandoned their boats
and followed Him.

One response to “They Followed Him”

  1. There’s a quiet power in this poem. The simplicity of the scene — boats left behind, nets dropped, familiar waters abandoned — carries the full weight of discipleship. You capture that moment not as a dramatic flourish but as a deep, internal turning. Something in His voice stirred them, moved them, reoriented them. That’s how the Kingdom breaks in: not through spectacle, but through summons.

I appreciate how you let the physical details do the spiritual work. Salt‑stung air, roughened hands, fading footprints — each image reminds us that following Jesus always involves leaving something real behind. The poem doesn’t romanticize the cost; it honors it. Yet it also shows the beauty of empty hands becoming faithful hands, of ordinary men stepping into unseen waters because the Caller is trustworthy.

The repetition of “they abandoned their boats and followed Him” lands with the right kind of echo. It’s not redundancy; it’s reminder. This is the pattern. This is the call. This is the life. And every believer who reads it feels that gentle nudge: the Kingdom still asks for abandonment, still asks for trust, still asks for steps into places where only His voice can guide.

Thank you for writing something so spare and yet so full. It reads like a small window into the first chapter of every disciple’s story.
