Prayerfully Poetic

A Collection of Prayerful Poems by Tim McGee

Do Not Build a Lifestyle

The world tells me
to build a life.

Stack comfort upon comfort.
Plan the years.
Arrange the days
like furniture in a well-lit room.

A lifestyle.

But dust decorates every shelf
eventually.

What good is a house
if the soul inside it
remains unfinished?

Lord Jesus,

do not let me spend my breath
constructing habits of comfort
while eternity waits at the door.

Let me build instead
with stones that will not crumble.

Faith
laid upon grace.

Mercy
set carefully beside grace.

Repentance
laying mortar in the hidden places.

Shape my heart
for the kingdom that does not decay.

For the life that does not rust.
For the dwelling not made by human hands.

Let the world chase lifestyles.

As for me,

build in me
a soul that will recognize You
when everlasting morning comes.

a soul that will recognize You
    when everlasting morning comes.”
