Prayerfully Poetic

A Collection of Prayerful Poems by Tim McGee

MLK still matters because the wound is still open

artwork by Greg McGee

Because justice is still postponed
with polite language
and reasonable excuses

Because power still fears
a love it cannot control
love that marches
love that refuses hatred
even when hatred feels justified

Dr. King still speaks
because we still listen to lies
that tell us silence is peace
and order is righteousness

His words matter
because the dream was never naive
it was demanding

It asked us to change
not commemorate

Thank you so much. Your words mean so much, as we travel these days. So very grateful for Dr. Martin Luther King.

  2. Great poem. MLK is an iconic figure in American life. Many conservative Christian sources argue that King was not a true Christian due to his liberal theology, which deviated from orthodox doctrines. In seminary papers, he expressed doubts about the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, the bodily resurrection, and the Second Coming, dismissing some biblical accounts as myths or legends. He promoted a “social gospel” focused on earthly justice and equality rather than evangelical emphases on personal salvation and Christ’s divinity, which some view as outright apostasy. Critics, including figures like John MacArthur, point to his denial of core tenets like the resurrection as evidence he never preached a full gospel. Additionally, allegations of personal moral failings, such as adultery, are cited as inconsistent with Christian leadership, though these are separate from theological critiques.
