Prayerfully Poetic

A Collection of Prayerful Poems by Tim McGee

Turn Back (a spoken word poem)

The world is burning
and we scroll.
The world is burning
and we scroll.

We scroll.

Politics is a battlefield.
Society a warzone.
We pick sides with hashtags.
We bleed opinions
and call it truth.

Venom in our veins.
Rage in our throats.
Hate in our hearts
and we call it
freedom.

Happiness?
Measured in likes.
Measured in hearts
that do not beat.

We’re dying of thirst
while drowning in noise.
We’re starving for truth
while feasting on lies.

What can we do?
Shout louder?
Fight harder?
Cancel more?

Turn back
while the world spins mad
and the streets sing chaos.
Turn back
while kingdoms fall
and idols rise.
Turn back
before your soul
is sold for nothing.

Because there is still
a whisper.
Still a whisper.
Soft.
Strong.
Unbroken.

Christ speaks it.
Christ breathes it.
Christ gives it.

Hope is not lost.
Hope is not lost.
It never was.

But you will not find it
in power.
You will not find it
in pride.
You will not find it
in a screen or an online pundit
that reflects your face
and preaches “values”
but cannot save your soul.

You will find it
where blood became mercy.
Where nails built a doorway.
Where a tomb was emptied
and death was undone.

Before the noise
consumes you whole.
Turn back
before you forget
the sound of grace.
Turn back
before you forget
what love really is.

Turn back.
To God.
Turn back.
To Christ.
Turn back.
To life.
